Dr. Naegele, circa in 1850 determined that the average gestation period which was approximately 266 days from conception. He assumed that the average women would get period after 28 days and ovulate at day 14 of her cycle. He calculated the due dates and done certain calculations in the following way:
((LMP + 7 days) – 3 months) = Due Date
EX: ((January 1, 1996 + 7 days) – 3 months) = October 8, 1996
On the other hand another physician Dr. Naegele neglected certain factors consciously in his calculations. Such as not every woman ovulates on day 14. Also some other factors he did not consider were ethnicity, parity (how many successful pregnancies), prenatal care, better nutrition, and screening factors.
Recently we used Naegele’s way to determine due dates. However certain questions were raised about the accuracy of this method. With the concept of true parental care mid wives as well as the doctors are educating women about risk factors, nutrition and parental screening. Through correct education and awareness this can extend the gestation for many women. Normal pregnancy will then fall between 38 to 42 weeks.
One finding indicates that we need to add 15 days to the Naegele EDC for Caucasian women, first time moms, and 10 days for Caucasian moms having subsequent children. African and American women normally experience shorter gestation periods.
Ultrasounds are used today to know about the menstrual history. It is an efficient and most accurate way of dating the pregnancy but accuracy can be questionable if performed in the first half of pregnancy.
Many are of the view that there are a lot other ways of knowing the exact date of pregnancy and a single method should not be overly relied upon. Other factors include:
- Quickening (first time mom feels the baby move)
- Fetal heart tones heard through Doppler and stethoscope
- Fundal height (Measurement of the uterus throughout pregnancy)
Having mentioned all these factors, the best way to determine when you are expecting is still to ask your doctor medically and get a professional opinion on the matter. Sure some of these online calculators do help, but they are not able to give you the most accurate results that you want.
